Helen's Stories

Going one step further!

Why read Helen's Stories?

When I retired from Hong Kong and moved to Malaysia in 2015, little did I know how my camera would open up so many doors. I started blogging as a way to show my family and friends the extraordinary sights of my new home in Johor Bahru, at the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia. I took photos of the historic parts of Johor Bahru and eventually produced a small guidebook to help other non-locals make sense of the city. From this I was asked to help the Malaysian Red Crescent (National Committee for Health & Community Services) by reporting on their activities on my website, and thus informing the expat community of their invaluable work. And this gave me the opportunity to explore life in Malaysia not generally seen by expats. As I prepared to leave Malaysia in 2020, I summarised all these adventures and experiences into a photobook called My Johor Journal. By the time Covid had delayed our plans and we finally left Malaysia in 2021, my website had grown to a massive size, hence the need to refocus with our new website here for Goodness Grays. But if you are interested in anything to do with traveling in Malaysia, or Malaysian history, please check out www.helengray.net. Now although I have now filmed a couple of documentaries with Lawrence on local history, my real love is photography. So, please follow my exploits here as I rediscover the UK and hopefully let you see it through fresh eyes.
