Kilchurn Castle

Kilchurn Castle is even further north than Inveraray, and is an atmospheric ruin on the end of Loch Awe. It was first constructed in the mid 15th century for the Campbells of Glenorchy. It contains the oldest surviving barracks on the British mainland, used after the first Jacobite Rising of 1689, but abandoned by the end of the 1700s. Today access to the building is barred due to its unstable nature. But it is well worth a visit for its stunning location.

To get to the castle, we had to walk under this simple yet striking green railway bridge, and then along a path through a field. And we were not alone, even at this late time in the day there were still more visitors coming in after us.

Despite the apparent isolation of Kilchurn Castle, we could still see impressive houses along the side of the loch, presumably serving travellers on the road to the Isle of Mull.
