If you head down to Chalkwell Beach (near Southend-on-Sea) on a Tuesday evening, you are likely to come across a group of people who call themselves "Freaks n Flames". They twirl various items with fire glowing from both ends, or they spit liquid paraffin from their mouths and send huge plumes of fire into the air. It's both terrifying and fascinating to watch. Because it was too windy to perform on the beach, the group practised in the shelter of the public toilet block, while local photographers tried to capture the magic.
Chalkwell beach really is a beach, and also a mooring area for small yachts, so while waiting for the sun to go down I took a few photos of the location. You can see industrial Canvey Island in the far distance, and a lone wind skier out on the shallows.
