Goodness Grays!

We're back in the UK!

Llyn Brianne Dam & Reservoir

21st August 2022

This dam is almost 300m above sea level and it is reached after a journey along some of Wales' many single track roads. Thankfully these roads were not too busy during our visit as there were not that many passing places along the very steep and windy route. This reservoir was formed in the early 1970's when the river Towy was dammed, making it the largest lake in South Wales. We stopped first at a lower viewing point where you can see the run-off area of this enormous structure (see photo above). Then we drove right up to the top and the main car park for more spectacular views. There is a road running all around the reservoir but it was closed to vehicles and it was too late in the day to embark on a long walk.

Apparently this location is popular from astrophotographers and stargazers. It was awarded Dark Sky Discovery Site status in October 2019, but I'm not sure I'd like to drive up these roads in the dark!
