Sandakan (Sabah)

 MG 9842

Sandakan was the original capital city of Sabah, but it was completely destroyed during World War II. So, the capital was moved to Jesselton, now known as Kota Kinabalu. It is a port city with plenty of fishing activity and boats everywhere. Its close proximity to the Philippines does mean that kidnapping of Westerners still occurs near here, so we stayed in our hotel once it was dark. You have to drive 4 miles out of Sandakan if you are interested in a night life here. As I hope you will see in some of the following photos, the sky is fantastic here. Huge clouds billow across the Sulu Sea, of course bringing a down pour of rain as well, but that’s Malaysia for you!
