On a very grey day, we drove out into the countryside to visit the Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker. This concrete complex was built 100 feet underground during the Cold War and is where the devolved central government and military commanders would have run the country in the event of a nuclear war. It was a truely bleak place still full of old telegraphic equipment, and dormitories with metal bunk beds and coarse blankets. We watched a government advisory film detailing how people could continue life in the presence of radioactive contamination!

The entrance to the bunker is via this cottage, and the exit is through a tunnel. This is now a privately-run museum, so you use an audioguide as you walk around. It is a fascinating place to visit to see what might have been.
