The Magistrate’s Office

 MG 9014

At the heart of Goryokaku Fort is the Hakodate Magistrate’s Office, which was reconstructed in 2006 - 2010 using traditional building techniques. It is a true work of art and stunningly beautiful in its simplicity inside. There is an excellent history section inside and a brief film showing how the restoration work was done; well worth a visit.

My photos really do not do justice to the proportions and elegance of the internal structures. I have always admired Japanese design, but I am simply not designed myself to sit on the floor or sleep on futons with hard pillows!

The Magistrate not only administered law and order, his job was more like that of a city major, overseeing all activities in Hakodate. Just imagine having this place as your office?
