Sunda Kelapa is the harbour area of Jakarta (Sunda is a region of West Java and Kelapa means coconut). This was a delightful area because the ships (Bugis and Makassar schooners) looked well-worn out, and the area was bustling with activity. It was very easy to imagine this harbour as it would have been in the 19th century.

Our guide had a quick chat with these guys as they came off a ship; apparently they had been fishing. We could have taken a small boat ride around the harbour which I think would have been very interesting, but I get too seasick for adventures of that sort.
