Day 5: Bay of Islands

IMG 0364

The Bay of Islands is of great historical relevance for New Zealand, although I think most visitors are more interested in the water sport options of the area! But the Government does a great job of making it easy for visitors to come across sites of interest by signposting with brown and white signs on the roadside. Walking paths are also well signposted and usually give some indication of how long the walk will take.

So, on Day 5 we took the vehicular ferry across to Russell, the first European settlement in New Zealand. Then we drove around the windy roads of the coastline. then back inland to Whakapara. We stopped at Jack Morgan’s museum and visited the Ruapekapeka Pa Historic Reserve. Descriptions of these areas are in the attached two webpages.
