Symonds Yat and Monmouth

As we left Tintern Abbey, the sun was slowing trying to peep through the mist and would have made the abbey look even more special. But this was not a photography holiday, so we continued next to Symonds Yat near Ross-on-Wye. From this vantage point you get a spectacular view of the River Wye as it curls its way through the countryside. If we had been doing the Wye Tour of old, we would have arrived by boat and then walked up to the top of the rocky outcrop called Symonds Yat. But we drove here instead! We did see the steps down to the river but decided we did not have enough time to do that trip, so stayed at the top and enjoyed the wonderful view as the mist had lifted by now. We also watched some birds of prey, probably peregrine falcons, arguing in the far distance and later fighting off some crows.

We were all rather hungry by now so decided to head off to Monmouth for a late lunch.

Monmouth is a Welsh town packed full of history. The old Monnow Bridge (shown on the right) was built in the mid 12th century and is the only remaining fortified river bridge in Great Britain with a gate tower on the bridge. This gate tower has become the favoured haunt of the town's pigeon population.

As you walk over the bridge, away from the town centre, you will find the 12th century Parish Church of St. Thomas the Martyr, Overmonnow.

We were able to take a look inside this church and admire the pews and wooden galleries made in the 1800's from oak grown on the Beaufort estates. I particularly liked the unusual looking font but do not know its history.

Walking back up the main street of Monmouth (Monnow St) we discovered a beautiful 17th century yellow Cornwall House and the impressive Shire Hall which now holds the tourist office for Monmouth.

At the top end of Monnow St is the elegant tower of the Monmouth Priory, founded in 1070 by Benedictine monks. By now the day was fading so we did not venture into the priory church or into the many other historic buildings in Monmouth. We will have to save those for another time.
