Puzzlewood has been puzzling visitors for centuries. It is a magical landscape of strange moss covered rock formations, ancient trees and secret caves. In the 1800s a local landowner laid down a mile of meandering pathways through the trees and gulleys for the amusement of his family and friends. It became so popular that he opened it to the public in the early 1900s and it remains much the same today.
The strange geological features here are called scowles. They are rock formations developed millions of years ago as water erosion of carboniferous limestone resulting in a natural underground cave system. Eventually those caves came to the surface and the area was exploited by Iron Age settlers then by the Romans for the extraction of iron ore. And today we have this magical landscape which would have been made even more magical by a bit more of the sun!
