Inveraray and its castle

4th July 2022

By this time in our trip around west Scotland, I had decided we must stop at any castles on the way. We had by now visited the functioning Culzean Castle, and the ruins of Dundonald Castle, so when we came to Inveraray after our lunch at Loch Fyne Oysters, we decided to take a look. And we were not disappointed! Inveraray Castle is one of the earliest examples of Gothic Revival architecture, but might also be seen as a Disney-esque fantasy castle. It has been the seat of the Dukes of Argyll, chefs of Clan Campbell, since the 18th century. And, just like Culzean Castle, it is filled with exquisite furnishings and marvellous displays of decommissioned firearms.

In the grand kitchen downstairs, there is a wooden cupboard with drawers labelled Ginger, Cloves & Nutmegs, Bitter Almonds, PIP Maccaroni, RIB Maccaroni, Indian Arrow Root, Cocoa, Isinglass, Clayed Sugar, Starch & Blue, etc etc. Who knows what most of these strangely named items were used for?

We walked around the gardens and noted the fine moss dangling from the trees in the dampness of this rainy day.

The small town of Inveraray looks out over Loch Fyne, the largest sea loch in Scotland. The castle is off to the left of this photo below.

The town's buildings are solid and functional It was too late in the day to visit Inveraray Jail, but we enjoyed walking around the streets here.
