Leaving Reykjavik
Day 14, 15th August 2023
Not too far from Iceland's international airport (Keflavik Airport) is a small museum called Vikingaheimar. It also gives a quick history of Iceland, but its star attraction is a replica of a 9th century Viking ship 'The Icelander' which had been excavated in Norway on 1882. In 2000, Captain Gunnar Marel Eggertsson built this replica boat and sailed it from Iceland to New York to commemorate the discovery of America by Leif Ericsson in 1000 AD. We were able to board the ship to get a sense of it size and fragility.
On the coastline outside the museum were stone statues and many small piles of rocks; the sort I'm more used to seeing on Asian mountains. So Lawrence decided to leave his mark here with his own piece of sculpture.
And so we come to the end of our road trip around Iceland. This country has much to offer the visitor, so please don't think you can do Iceland in just a few days. There's much more to Iceland than just Reykjavik and the Golden Circle, and we barely touched the wilderness beyond.
