Day 9 - Alor Setar, Part 1

IMG 0837

Because of the upcoming Hari Raya Haji holidays (three days of public holidays in Kedah/Perlis), we had to get most of our museum visits done today (30th July 2020). Most museums are open everyday except the two major religious holidays in the year, and on Fridays will have a longer lunchtime closing and/or an earlier closing time. Occassionally a museum closes on a Monday, so all these things have to be researched in advance.

We started a little late this morning as we needed to complete the video from yesterday, since we’d stayed out drinking sake rather than come back to the hotel to do this. We are on holiday after all! Our first stopon Day 9 was the Kedah State Museum, then the Kedah Paddy Museum, then we visited a couple of Traditional Malay Houses followed by the Kedah Royal Museum and Balai Besar and a walk around the central square by the Zahir Mosque. Another busy day but full of things of interest. And you can see more of the historic buildings of Alor Setar in my account of Day 10.

Alor Setar proved to be a great tourist destination with plenty of variety and well-presented attractions. We finished our day with a western-style dinner at a roof-top cafe (Balcony Cafe and Bar) just around the corner from the hotel. Delicious food washed down with cider; I did not expect to find this in Kedah.
