The massive temple complex (3822 temples, pagodas and monasteries) of Bagan is impressive on all levels and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Building here began in the 9th century and the kingdom of Pagan reached its height in the 13th century. Everywhere you look there is a structure of some kind. Most of the buildings are red brick, but originally they would have been covered in white plaster. Bagan regularly suffers from earthquakes so buildings are regularly repaired/rebuilt, with donors gaining spiritual value in the process and leaving tablets next to the structure with their name inscribed.
