Day 10: To Rotorua via Hobbiton

Our destination today was Rotorua, one of the smelliest towns on this journey, but more about that later. To break up this 5 hour journey, we took a diversion to the Hobbiton Movie Set.  It was pouring with rain, and cold, and muddy, and because everyone was huddling under umbrellas, it was hard to get close enough to the guide to hear what she was saying.  It also meant we didn’t really have long enough to enjoy a drink and a meat and ale pie in the Green Dragon Inn!  Altogether, quite a dissappointing time, but I am sure it would have been lovely in the sunshine!  And, there is nothing to see inside these Hobbit holes, as they are just doors; all the interior shots were done elsewhere in studios.

Rotorua is the thermal activity centre of New Zealand, and the smell of sulphurous fumes pervaded the hotel.  In the evening, we wrapped up warm and were taken to the Mitai Maori show where we ate a dinner of earth-cooked lamb and chicken under canvas (cold), watched a show (cold), then walked through the forest to see glow worms (cold and wet).  Felt sorry for the performers as their costumes were minimal.
