The ongoing beautification process of central Johor Bahru has opened up the view of the Indian community area here. Many of the workers on this project look of Indian heritage; some will be on 2-3 year contracts while others will have families here going back several generations. The Sikhs who introduced me to their temple were working here as security guards, which is an occupation their forebearers might have done back in the days of British colonialism. Nowadays, there are workers here from Nepal and Myanmar, as well as from India and Sri Lanka, but I apologise for not always being able to distinguish them.
So here is a random collection of photos with ‘Little India’ as a theme.
Just for completeness, here is a photo of the Indian Mosque at the corner of Jalan Dhoby and Jalan Bukit Timbalan. I have not been inside this building yet though, and I really must look into the history of the Indian community here in Johor Bahru.
