I already knew that my Malaysian friends loved Milo, and yesterday I learnt a bit more about why that might be. Milo was created in Australia by Thomas Mayne in 1934, and it is basically a mixture of chocolate and malt powder which can be served hot or cold. In 1950 it was introduced into Malaysia by Nestle, as a tonic food drink, especially for athletes.

Nestle are long time supporters of the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) and held a promotion in AEON Tebrau shopping mall to celebrate the 70th birthday of Milo. I decided to try my hand at making a video of today’s event, so my MRC friends were doing all the photo-taking. They didn’t need any persuasion to try the different varieties of Milo, and particularly enjoyed the new low-sugar version.

Mr. Vela (photo left with a gentleman from Nestle), is the Deputy Chairman, Johor Bahru District, Malaysian Red Crescent, and he was also celebrating his 70th birthday this year; he won two prizes today. The Pekan Milo display area was well laid out with staff to explain the different displays, from the history of Milo to initiatives to recycle used packaging into roof tiles, to keeping Malaysians fit and healthy. Everyone was wearing masks and groups were escorted around the displays in groups of five. I spent some time interviewing Syed Amir (shopper and consumer engagement manager, Nestle; seen in top photo) for the video, and my apologies for the noisy motorbikes in the soundtrack. Please do watch the video to learn more from the people who know….
