We returned to our hotel in Taiping to shower and rest as it had been a very hot day today. Our hotel room had a view of the lake in the distance, and today was our last chance to visit it. So we walked that way in the early afternoon, hoping it would not be so hot. But by now it was also humid so we were very quickly soaked in sweat again!
As we walked along the rather run down streets of Taiping, we noticed the politically correct street name changes; Speedy Road is now Jalan Ngah Ibrahim.

Then we found ourselves at the Jubilee Jetty overlooking a serene lake surrounded by lush greenery. This lake had once been an open tin mine, and was filled in by the British in 1880 to produce this recreation area. Indeed this was the first public garden established during British rule in Malaysia; Taiping has many ‘firsts’. One could spend a whole day exploring these gardens, and it provided a lovely respite from the busy streets of Taiping. You can even hire paddle boats here, but I think that option is currently closed.
The Lake Gardens are famous for their golden rain trees which arch over the pathway.
