The Johor Heritage Foundation (at Jalan Sungai Chat, Sri Gelam, 80100 Johor Bahru) is hosting the Johor Cultural Festival from 12 - 17th October 2019, and all events are free! When I first saw the posters for this event on the Yayasan Warisan Johor FB page, I left a comment to ask if there was any English translation of the schedule as I wanted to come to the Ghazal music event. I got a reply saying the events were from 9am to 8pm on 12-17th Oct, so not very helpful. Thankfully, Rene Marene came to my rescue. She is a local lady who teaches Malay to expats and is keen to tell expats about local culture and heritage, of which she is very proud. She translated the schedule and posted it to Johor Expat Community FB page so I shared the link to Johor Parents FB page. For convenience, I will put the schedule here at the end of this blog.
Last evening I attended a Cultural Performance at 8:30pm and the main event was a performance called Ujung Tanah and it was a very professional production. The live musicians and singers up in the gallery were the highlight for me, so do sit on the left side of the auditorium to get a good view of them. I couldn’t get a sense of a story line in the show but it didn’t really matter. Even when they started talking in Malay, there was enough interest in costumes and music to keep my attention. The final costumes (shown above) are the traditional clothes/textiles of Johor, although I don’t think the silver high heeled shoes were ‘traditional’!
I was also impressed by an all-male performance using kris (Malay daggers). Their movements were so precise and synchronised; loved it!
This show lasted about 90 mins and I thoroughly recommend you taking this rare opportunity to see and listen to unique Johorean heritage.
