Menara Alor Setar

It was late afternoon before we arrived in Alor Setar, the capital city of Kedah. We stayed at the Royale Signature Hotel which was conveniently located and I can thoroughly recommend. We decided to go for a walk to see what was around and find somewhere to eat. It turned out that Alor Setar had many interesting dining options which was a very pleasant surprise. We spotted the towering Menara Alor Setar and decided to head up to the top of this radio tower. There was a 50% discount on offer (RM48 for 2 persons), but we couldn’t go to the restaurant as that was already full. The staff were very helpful in guiding us to the right place and the sun was setting by the time we got to the top. Still, the view was well worth it.

Unbeknown to us, our ticket entitled us to walk out onto a glass platform which was a little scary, but we did it!

The heritage buildings of Alor Setar are all centred around the beautiful Masjid Zahir which you might spot under the purple lights in the photo below.

So, with it now too dark to see anything else outside, we returned to ground level and stopped at the Hoya Japanese Cuisine restaurant (Jalan Tengah) which we had walked passed on our way to the tower. The food was so good we returned there a couple of days later. Of course, the addition of sake really helped with our enjoyment of the meal!
