A Drawing Cafe (4th May 2021)

Lawrence and I have recently discovered the joy of painting. Two local artists, Leenda Pedersen and Raneeta Gill of Souse Artist, started running Sip & Paint events late last year, and we have been to three such events so far. We get a canvas, acrylic paints and brushes, and a theme to paint in an afternoon, all accompanied by wine and snacks. We have even been out now and bought some painting materials to use at home; especially useful right now as we spend more time at home to avoid crowds.

Yesterday I went to meet Mr. Sam Park (shown above) as he had bought copies of my books which I needed to deliver. Only when I arrived did I realise that he owned a business called ‘A Drawing Cafe’, which is a space in which you can paint, and drink coffee. Mr. Park is from South Korea, and apparently it is not unusual there to find a cafe where you can go and sip coffee and paint at the same time. Although his main job is in I.T., you can tell that his passion is in providing this facility for others to enjoy, even though he is not an artist himself.

Mr. Park lives with his family in Johor Bahru, where there are testimated to be 5,000 Koreans (in 2019), and I presume many live in Sunway Iskandar as there are several Korean restaurants there above Jaya Grocer in Sunway Citrine. Mr. Park opened his cafe in late 2019, and of course the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t exactly helped his business grow. But if you are looking for somewhere to go to release your creative juices, this is certainly somewhere to consider. And he makes a delicious cup of cappuccino too!

At the Drawing Cafe, you can buy drawings stencilled onto paper or canvas, and simply add the colours to the painting as you like. This is particularly useful for those new to painting who are still learning how to draw. But you can also purchase paper or canvas and add you own designs. And Mr. Park will arrange for your artwork to be framed so you can display it on your walls at home.
