Today we could see the coastline more clearly (any black dots on the photos are actually swallows busy darting overhead). The little island is Bunting Island which actually belongs to the Langkawi archipelago. The Jerai HIll Resort has plenty of flowering plants to enjoy, so it was very pleasant just walking around the site after breakfast. There is a Botanical Garden on the hill, but it was closed (opening days I think were Thursday to Sunday).

Driving around the foothills of Gunung Jerai showed us some beautiful countryside. This hill is so visible in the otherwise flat landscape that it was used as a beacon for ships coming from the west. Apparently it is visible for nearly 100 miles from the sea, and at night would have a lit beacon to guide ships towards the Merbok estuary.
At this time of year, the rice plants are a vibrant yellow-green colour, making a pleasant contrast to the darker forrest-covered hill, or the morning’s pale blue sky.
