Day 18: To Kaikoura

Because we had been staying in Split Apple Lodge, we thought we aught to visit this rock before leaving Kaiteriteri.  It was 9 am and already there were many tourist boats circling around bringing people close to this strange rock. Then it was a long drive to Kaikoura on the east coast, and we’d been adviced to stop at the Top House cafe for lunch (see below), but it was closed.

You should be able to see the mountains in the distance, so the scenery was on the change. We drove through the vineyards of Marlborough, and finally we were able to stop to take a photo of some sheep! Not all sheep in New Zealand look like this, as there are many different varieties. What was noticeable on the south island was the high density of sheep in a field.

After reaching Blenheim on the east coast, we pretty much hugged the coastline until we arrived at Kaikoura. We stopped briefly to look at a fur seal colony and then arrived at our motel. They booked us in at The Pier restaurant just up the road where we had an early fish dinner and some lovely wine (so nice to be able to walk to dinner!).
