In 1604, the Portuguese built a triangular shaped fort in Muar known as the Fortaleza de Muar. You can see its location in the map below, being further inland and to the west of the older fort area of Kubu Bentayan.
Today, the Muarar 99 hotel sits on the site of the old fort, and this is well worth a visit for history buffs. The outside walls of the hotel display information plaques on the history of the fort as well as the history of Muar and of Johor.
There is also a display panel showing places of interest in Muar.
The hotel lobby is designed along Portuguese lines and has a reference library for guests to use as well as more general information such as how to identify the flags of Johor.
