As with trying to photograph mosques and Hindu temples on this trip, the large gates protecting this stunning Thai Buddhist temple were also closed. The size of this complex is hard to show in my photos, but it was large! I had read of two such temples in Alor Setar and this wasn’t even the one I had intended to visit. We got here quite by chance and stopped the car as soon as we spotted it on the road side. For those of you familiar with Malaysian roads, you will know that there is often a barrier in the middle of the road so turning round to come back to something may need a long detour. Thankfully, there was so little traffic today that pulling over was not hazardous.

Along the wall near the entrance gate were these panels showing ‘The Vassandon Prince to give a White Elephant and to give a White Horse’. I do not know the background to these stories but the carvings are pretty impressive.
Even though we could not explore inside this temple complex, the workmanship on the external walls left plenty for us to admire.
